From Sofa to Trail

Whether you’re exploring rolling hills, dense forests, or open fields, there’s something deeply satisfying about being in the great outdoors.

But before you set out on your walk or hike, let’s explore some essential tips to maximize your enjoyment of a countryside experience.

  • Plan Your Route: Research your hiking destination beforehand. Consider the length of the trail, its difficulty level, and any notable features you want to see along the way. Ensure the trail is suitable for your fitness level.

  • Check the Weather: Weather can change rapidly in the countryside, so it’s important to check the forecast before you set out. Dress in layers and be prepared for rain, even if the weather looks clear.

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: Good hiking boots or shoes are essential. They should have a sturdy sole and offer support to your ankles to help prevent injuries.

  • Pack Essentials: Bring a backpack with water, snacks, a first-aid kit, a map and compass (or GPS device), a flashlight, and a whistle. It’s also wise to bring a lightweight raincoat or poncho.

  • Leave No Trace: Respect the countryside and its wildlife. Stay on marked trails, avoid picking plants or disturbing animals, and make sure you take any rubbish home with you.

  • Inform Someone of Your Plans: Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. This is a simple step that can greatly enhance your safety.

  • Stay Hydrated and Energized: Drink water regularly throughout your hike, and eat snacks to keep your energy up. It’s easy to become dehydrated and fatigued without realizing it.

  • Enjoy the Moment: Remember to take breaks to rest and enjoy the scenery around you. The countryside offers unique landscapes, sounds, and smells; take time to appreciate them.

  • Be Prepared for Emergencies: Know basic first aid and how to react in typical wilderness emergencies. A portable charger for your phone can be a lifesaver in case you need to call for help.

  • Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from animals. Feeding wildlife can disrupt their natural behaviours and diet.
